Bach’s monumental D major cello suite opens the second Belvedere program with triumph and joy. We continue in the Baroque idiom with the Handel/Halversen variations, which is a gradual intensification of sonic sheen. We conclude the concert with Schumann’s deeply Romantic piano quartet. Written in his “Year of Chamber Music”, Clara Schumann, his wife and brilliant pianist, was the true inspiration for the work.
